Chip demand and lab revenue kept growing while funding got harder for AI builders

Overall read: demand is holding up, and funding is under more strain than a month ago

No large AI company has cut its spending plans, and suppliers still report demand above supply. The strain this week was in how the build-out is paid for.

  • growthAnthropic's draft IPO prospectus shows first-half revenue of $16.3B, against $1.1B a year earlier. TSMC, ASML and the Taiwanese server makers all say demand is above supply.
  • riskMeta's free cash flow turned negative and it says its AI spending now needs outside equity. A blocked grid upgrade cut NextDC's outlook by a third, and CoreWeave's bonds trade at distressed prices.

The seven questions

How likely each outcome is within a year

How we set these
H1
Will the big AI spenders cut planned capex by 15% or more from its peak?
12 mo
14% very unlikely
H2
Will an AI-infrastructure company default, restructure its debt or be forced to sell assets, at $5B or more?
12 mo
33% unlikely
H3
Will Nvidia's data-center revenue fall two quarters in a row?
12 mo
6% very unlikely
H4
Will OpenAI, Anthropic or xAI raise money at a flat or lower valuation, or cut compute commitments?
12 mo
40% unlikely
H5
Will a shortage of power, packaging, memory or materials delay 5 GW or more of AI capacity by two quarters?
12 mo
56% likely
H6
Will AI revenue grow faster than AI capex over the next year?
12 mo
65% likely
H7
Will AI capability keep improving at its recent pace?
12 mo

How it works

Public data in, a checked report out

More about the method
01

Collect

Every day, collectors gather company filings, exchange releases, prices, credit spreads, supplier revenue and GPU rental rates, and store each one with its source.

02

Analyse

Analyst models rate twelve layers of the supply chain on five measures. Five separate runs set the odds on seven questions, and two more argue the bull and bear cases.

03

Check

Code checks every figure against the stored source it cites, a second model checks the facts, and a reviewer from another AI lab reads the whole issue.
